What Is The Bible

Your interest in the scriptures has brought you to this page, so, welcome. Believers accept the Bible as the inspired word of God. There are very good books on Christian Evidences that  discuss proofs supporting the existence of God that you will find in the resources page of  this site. The Bible is a complex book but not impossible to grasp once we understand a few guiding principles and follow a few simple recommendations that will make reading and studying more enjoyable. First there are some general guidelines that I believe will help  as you start studying the Bible for the first time, or, wish to improve your ability to study the word of God.

We generally look to external sources for confirmation of validity but the Bible is unique in that it supplies  its own evidences internally. Paul the apostle stated that all scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable (2 Tim 3.16 ). We view the Bible as the product of divine inspiration. A process in which the Holy Spirit directed the writers to record God’s words for all time. Peter states that no scripture came by private interpretation (2 Peter 1.20-21 ) meaning that the Bible is not the product of human thinking or experience. Divine providence preserves the scriptures in a world that is largely opposed to them and constantly seeks to disprove and devalue them.

The Bible is referred to as the sword of the Spirit (Eph  6.17 ) and has the power to penetrate our very being, exposing our heart and intentions  (Heb 4.12 ).  Paul stated that the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation (Rom 1.16 ) making the scriptures not only relevant but critical in the lives of all humanity. Christ stated that in the end we will be judged by His words recorded in the scriptures (John 12.48 ) which were given to Him by the Father (John 17.8 ) . If we conclude that believing in God is the reasonable thing to do in this life then it follows that we will desire to know as much about what He has told us so we can have a home in Heaven after this life has ended.

Studying the Bible is not only essential and critical to our future but is enjoyable. Deepening our appreciation of the scriptures is a pursuit that will bring many rewards in every area of our lives while increasing our comprehension and love for God. The Bible does not have to be a big thick book on a shelf that is mysterious and scary. It can become our companion for life to teach, support, excite, strengthen and encourage us. If we read and study properly we will come to know the truth as God intended.
